Abstract
The article sets out to describe the fusions and unions of municipalities in Italy as spread over time and space. The first part highlights the recent and increasing propensity of municipalities to merge. From 2011 to 2019, this phenomenon caused a reduction of municipal administrations to 166 unities. The second part examines the geographic distribution and the internal structure of the unions, as well as the level of involvement by the municipalities.
