Abstract

The arrival and spread of the online journalism has thrown the daily press into crisis. However the prestige of the newspaper has not been undermined to a very great extent and, more importantly, the preeminence of the front page as the shop window of the most relevant topical news still persists. The article takes a gender perspective to reconsider the front page, and offers the findings of a survey carried out on a sample of 12 national and international daily papers, to the aim of mapping the traces of the female presence - in terms of bylines, subjects and sources of the news - on the most visible and prestigious space of the newspaper. What comes out is an increasing valorization of professional women journalists, without this achievement helps to undermine the male-centrism that reigns in contemporary journalism.
