Abstract

A growing computing power, new deep learning algorithms and the availability of immense databases, have managed to fast-track the progress of artificial intelligence (AI) in the last few years. Some media outlets have been using AI-based software to compose financial and sports articles since 2014, and the adoption trend of this technology is undoubtedly mounting. While journalism is just one of the several professions that AI may put in jeopardy, for newspapers there are opportunities to be reaped, like exploiting AI for database-driven investigative reporting, or for customer recommendation purposes. Still, an upcoming, huge disruption brought by artificial intelligence will be real-time translation in all or most of languages, which may tear down Babel's Tower, the last barrier to universal news distribution.
