Abstract

Amsterdam has set an ambitious goal of becoming a climate-neutral city. Citizens play a crucial role in achieving this goal. This paper aims to address the following questions: To what extent are Amsterdam’s citizens aware and supportive of the carbon neutrality plans? And does the socio-demographic status of citizens affect their behavior? Drawn on the theory of planned behavior, we focus on awareness, attitude, and perceived behavior control to empirically examine whether these three can drive environmental-friendly behaviors. The results reveal that sustainability awareness, environmental attitude, and perceived behavior control positively affect individuals’ pro-environmental behavior, regardless of their socio-demographic status.
