Abstract

This essay analyses a famous proverb focused on the game of chess, identifying its source and reconstructing its tradition as much as possible. Originally documented in the Celtic area, in its reception in Italy this maxim is attested in a mutation that makes it truly universal, capable to overcome eras and geographical distances, keeping untouched the charm and evocative power that distinguishes it.
