Abstract

The article aims at analysing the role of Government Accountability Office (GAO) who supports the legislative branch in policy evaluation to improve the performance and ensure the accountability of the U.S. government. At the beginning, GAO was conceived as a control and accounting institution, but afterwards it became an effective support to the public policies in the direction of more accountability. The results show that over time there has been a high level of implementation of GAO Recommendations and a bipartisan acknowledgement of the importance of this institution.
