Abstract

The present article critically reviews the possible policy challenges for pensions in the era of digitalization and automation. We first review the dynamics of pension policies in Europe. Hence, we discuss the implications on pension systems sustainability and adequacy engendered by technological innovations. Accordingly, we will distinguish the main characteristics of pension systems that might jeopardize most sustainability and adequacy. We propose a new typology of pension systems in Europe by focusing on their capacity to effectively deal with the effects of digitalization and automation. The article ends by suggesting possible policy reforms that may help tackle the negative effects of the expected path of technological innovations.
