Abstract
Mentioned among the basic values on which the EU is founded, the rule of law represents undoubtedly one of the most important criteria for the accession of candidate or potential candidate Countries but maybe also the hardest to be defined. Analyzing the current enlargement process to the Western Balkans, the paper reflects on the meaning that the European Union attributes to the rule of law through its evaluations on the legal systems of the Candidate Countries
