Abstract

The contribution aims to offer a new, standard study on the Synod convened by Catholicos Mar Aba that took place throughout the Iranian dioceses of Maishan, Fars and Elam during the Summer of 540. The research tries to unravel the knot of facts, events and later ideological reinterpretations. The detailed reconstruction of Mar Aba's attitudes towards the pre-existing schismatic fragmentation of East Syrian metropolitan bishoprics permits us to gain a deeper insight into the role and meaning of synodical tools for rebuilding the lost unity of the Church.
