Abstract

The College of doctors of canon law and the College of doctors of civil law were a constant in the life of Bologna’s Studium from the very beginning. The workings of these colleges have been variously examined by a historiography that has, however, neglected to build a picture of college members through available records of aggregationes taking place over the centuries. These aggregationes are an important feature when attempting to understand the role played by college doctors in Bologna society of the time. This paper proposes to reconstruct registers of the members of the College of doctors of canon law and the College of doctors of civil law, and provide a series of reflections starting from these data. Moreover, they can help us broaden our knowledge of the colleges, which were true centres of power in early modern Bologna. The College of doctors of canon law and the College of doctors of civil law were a constant in the life of Bologna’s Studium from the very beginning.
