Abstract
x The database of the teaching and research personnel, working at the Italian Faculties of Mathematical, physical and natural sciences between 1860 and 1915, contains 6,551 records referring to 2,812 individuals, including the chair holders, the official employees of the research and teaching institutions, and the private lecturers. The data are analyzed statistically. The first parts concern the numeric development of the various kinds of lectureships, of the scientific and technical staff, and a comparison with the corresponding data of the medical Faculties. The second group of analyses investigates the level of mobility of the assistants and professors, and the main academic training centers in Italy. The third part surveys the presence of women working in the science Faculties, and the fourth inquires the age pattern of the Italian science professors.
