Abstract

Technology has always played a consistent role in Italian screenplays, both as an element of distinctive production design and as an icon of modernity and cultural trends in different moments. Comedies remain the preferred genre to portray social change and representations of the clashes between tradition and modernity, and mobile phones and social networks play a significant part in those stories. This article examines the relationship between contemporary storytelling and new technologies, in order to understand whether the presence of smartphones and social media in Italian comedies implies renewed attention to the social and cultural background.
