Abstract

The essay explores the «phantasmatic» nature of “C’eravamo tanto amatiµ (E. Scola, 1974), a film break in the filmography of Ettore Scola and also in the style of Italian comedy. In fact, it is built around a mix of passions - political, cinematic and romantic – represented as “ghostsµ who return from the past and condition the lives of the protagonists. The essay develops this reading on three levels: the reconstruction of Italian history, references to the history of Italian cinema and, finally, the role of the soundtrack by Armando Trovajoli.
