Abstract

Based on what the press reported at the time and on the information recovered from Ercole Ferrario’s private archive, the essay is aimed at considering Theodor Mommsen’s inspections throughout Varese’s area, which took place during spring in 1869 and in 1871 while he was composing the fifth volume of Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum. Few days inspections in both cases, but they were enough to prove how talented the scholar was to relate to several local realities and to connect to all the associates who contributed to the fulfilment of his work. Three unpublished letters to Bernardino Biondelli, recently discovered in Biblioteca Ambrosiana of Milan, are transcribed
