Abstract
This essay presents and analyses the amendments made by Lodovico Dolce to the punctuation of four epistles written by Pietro Aretino in 1540, later merged in the second volume of his Lettere, published in 1542. The study is based on the collation of autograph letters and their published versions. The aim is on the one hand to interpret Dolce’s interventions (also in relation to his Osservazioni della volgar lingua, 1550); on the other, it is to describe Aretino’s use of punctuation in the 1540s.
