Abstract
This essay provides a critical edition of the official speech in praise of Federico da Montefeltro that humanist and Florentine chancellor Bartolomeo Scala gave to the Signori on June 29th, 1472. About two months earlier, that condottiere had brought Volterra back under the control of the Florentine republic; immediately after being taken, the city was furiously sacked. Inspired by the model of the perfect general in Cicero’s De imperio Cnei Pompei, the oration never alludes to the violent means by which Federico managed to bring that city under Florentine rule again. Instead, its author prefers to focus on a series of commonplaces that are typical of rhetorical pieces devoted to the art of war
