Abstract
After reviewing the diversity of attitudes of the Italian State with regard to the Third Sector organizations since Unification (1861), the paper focuses on the evolution of the intervention strategies of Public Administration in the post-war period. In this regard, the distinction between the three versions of the subsidiarity principle (circular, horizontal, vertical) is clarified, showing the practical implications stemming from the adoption of one or the other version. The essay concludes with a comment of the EU Action Plan for Social Economy of December 9, 2022.
