Abstract

This essay will examine a hypothesis for the date of Pietro Aretino’s (1492-1556) arrival in Rome and the relationships he established in the city in the first quarter of the sixteenth century with the banker Agostino Chigi, with the painter Raphael and with the engraver Marcantonio Raimondi. Furthermore, for the dating of the portrait of Aretino executed by Raimondi, new documents have been provided which are useful for dating the engraving.
