Abstract
Creativity was at the center of Tullio De Mauro's explication of natural languages. This essay extends his work by attempting to analyze the role of creativity in the origins of language. It also treats issues of communication and cognition (in both hominids and other animal species), comparing De Mauro and Garroni's position on such questions. The essay closes by drawing on ontogenetic approaches to recapitulate the argument developed.
