Abstract

This paper deals with the circulation abroad of "The Baron in the Trees", which has been translated into 35 languages in 43 countries thus far. The paper explores the international reception of the novel through assessing the number and chronology of the editions, its presence in particular collections, the role of translators, and the comparison with the international success of other Calvino's works. Through this case study, the contribution delineates significant features of Calvino's position with regard to the difficult and indispensable practice of translation and to the value of the literary language, offering new interpretative perspectives to discuss the XX century Italian canon.
