Abstract
Calvino stated that the literature should work «on the untranslatable brink of the language ». The last page of "The Baron in the Trees" contains a very unusual term which is hard to turn in any foreign language. This article surveys several translations, and highlights the three conclusions of Calvino's heraldic trilogy, where the end of the narrative is always intertwined with the theme of disappearance.
