Abstract

In 2019, the College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP) at Tongji University in Shanghai acquired the research library of American architectural historian Henry A. Millon (1927-2018). This short paper offers an introduction to the book collection, explaining the reasons and background of its acquisition. It then presents the affordances of this new scholarly resource for the study and teaching of Western architectural history in China: more specifically, it inquires into the meanings of the collection as an expression of Millon’s intellectual biography, as a critical medium to foster new scientific research, and as an object in migration, subject to decontextualization, reinterpretation and translation. By discussing these aspects, the paper frames the collection’s value as both a scholarly tool and a subject of academic interest
