Abstract

The article focuses on analyzing the sketch of the Massacre of the Innocents by Francesco Trevisani, currently exhibited in the state museums of Dresden, and its relation to a canvas located in Veroli, in Frosinone, attributed to the circle of Trevisani and depicting the same theme. This previously unknown Veroli canvas reveals a different interpretation of the theme, providing insights into artistic and stylistic variations linked to the geographical and cultural context. The analysis of the sketch and its derivation also aims to undertake a survey of the theme of the Massacre in Trevisani’s production, highlighting the dynamic relationships between artworks and how a representation can transform and adapt to local needs and influences.
