Abstract
The aim of the essay is to reconstruct, from a perspective that combines art history and history of institutions, the reorganisation projects of the Quadriennale formulated in the immediate post World War II period within the Direzione generale antichità e belle arti, under the direction of Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli, through a number of unpublished documents conserved in the Archivio centrale dello Stato. The emphasis is on breaking the continuity with the past regime and democratising cultural institutions, through the proposals of Giorgio Castelfranco, Giulio Carlo Argan and Corrado Maltese.
