Abstract
This article provides an overview of the relationship between the study of ancient coins and gems from the Renaissance to the early 19th century. During this period, the study of these two different classes of materials was strongly related: initially, glyptics was influenced by numismatics, then, by the mid-18th century, numismatists adopted solutions used by scholars working with gems.
