Abstract
The "Introduction" to the Italian edition of the fundamental volume of Pevsner "Academies of Art, Past and Present" (1940) is now presented - unchanged and deliberately not up-to-date - as evidence of the debt that his author, at that time professor of History of Art at the "Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma", has contracted with the illuminating methodological indications provided by Enrico Castelnuovo in Per una storia sociale dell'arte - I and II (1976, 1977).
