Abstract

Felix Nussbaum was a German-Jewish painter. He worked between the 1920s and the 1940s; later he was deported and died in Auschwitz. Nussbaum Ks paintings describe the themes of Jewish identity, political exclusion and persecution; they can be considered among the most extraordinary examples of the art of remembrance. Two relevant points on Felix NussbaumKs artistic career are the relationship he established with many major German contemporary artists as well as the debate he had with Italian art. (e artworks of Neue Sachlichkeit as well as the Metafisica and Novecento movements – which he first encountered in Rome between 1932 and 1933 – influenced his style. Nussbaum followed these references until his last tragic paintings, just before he was deported. In todayKs climate where spreading and sharing the ShoahKs testimonies is absolutely necessary – Felix NussbaumKs art gains a fundamental value.
