Abstract
From 1856 the ‘Cavaliere’ Giovan Battista Chiarini edits the fourth edition of Carlo Celano’s Notize. Although the approbation of Benedetto Croce and the success among the scholars, this edition is merely the result of a big plagiarism from another text, forced under the name of Celano, and the amputation of the whole phase of 18 th century reprints of Notizie. This essay tries to refresh the history of those misunderstandings, to analyse Chiarini’s methods and to suggest how its work should be reconsidered nowadays.
