Abstract

This article is about the «place apart» that the Jewish minority occupies in society at the end of the Middle Ages and which derives from the role it plays as an ally or an asset of power vis-à-vis its traditional competitors which are the princes and the Church. This particular, rich and complex relationship cannot be defined in a binary or simplistic way, but combines protection, subjection and exploitation, all facets more or less highlighted of an evolutionary interdependence depending on the context. The article focuses on the effects of this relationship on the urban world of the Crown of Aragon in the end of the Middle Ages.
