Bullfighting in Recent Spanish Legislation: An Intangible Cultural Heritage to be Valued and Protected

Abstract

The bullfighting is a fundamental part of the Spanish cultural heritage, as well as important economic sector throughout the country. However, the recent tensions autonomist have put at risk the survival of this tradition in some areas of the iberian peninsula, especially in Catalonia. To this trend responded the state legislature declaring bullfighting cultural heritage with the Ley 18/2013, in an attempt to stabilize the discipline and avoid cultural schisms. This trend covers particular interest as it reveals complex issues such as the unavailability of culture and its transversal incidence, subjects of this contribution, which traces the main steps of the debate related to the world of the bull.
