Abstract
This article explores the relations between the opera "Francesca da Rimini" by Sergei Rachmaninov and Dante's episode that inspired it ("Inferno V"). The libretto is studied in a broader context of the reception of the episode of Francesca in the 19th and early 20th centuries Russian literature: poems by Dmitry Merezhkovsky, Valery Bryusov, Vyacheslav Ivanov and Alexandr Blok, and an essay by Osip Mandel'tam are taken into account. In the analysis of the libretto, attention is also paid to elements derived from Boccaccio's commentary on Dante's Comedy.
