Abstract
Addis Ababa has a long-standing tradition of practicing urban and periurban agriculture and treating it as one of the major land use components in its urban and regional plans. Urban and peri-urban agriculture helps urban centres to transform from sole consumers to producers of agricultural products thereby curtailing food shortage, creating employment and contributing to environment. If appropriate policy, planning, institutional and legal supports are provided, urban and peri-urban agriculture can also have economic impacts at household, city, and macro levels.
