Abstract

The assessment of teaching and scientific quality for universities and individuals is a very hard task. A first step is to recognize that no one is in the position to reject evaluation policies. Further, the adoption of internationally recognized indicators is a compelling condition for maintaining Italian psychology within the scientific community. Similarly, the definition of psychology, its methods, its relationships with other disciplines, are not defined by individual wishes or personal approaches. The present and the future of psychology are determined by the evolution of the discipline and its relationships with emergent areas of research such as life and data science, information technologies and bioethics. The adoption of the best indicators for assessing psychological teaching and research is a direct consequence of our capacity to understand what psychology is now and, above all, what psychology will be in the next decades.
