Abstract

We tested the ability of musicians in categorising as minor or major musical intervals where the highest frequency component could be varied along a continuum. In the first experiment subjects had to categorise third and sixth bichords with a reaction time task. In the second experiment listeners rated the intonation of the same stimuli of the first experiment. Results demonstrated that the categorisation of the musical interval is independent from the role of the interval in the tonal hierarchy.
