Abstract
In the context of skilled visual word recognition, a process is defined as automatic if it reflects mental activities that are triggered by stimulus presentation, mandatory and ballistic. In this paper, we present an experiment where the factors manipulated were task set (Besner & Care, 2003) and letters identity. The results, undermining the automaticity theoretical claims, pointed out that participants could postpone functional stimulus processing.
