Abstract
Review focuses on the different theoretical contributes about Emotional Intelligence (EI), that is defined as a trait-based construct as well as an ability-based construct. The principal assessment tools (self-report scales and ability-based tests) and the results of the recent published literature are discussed, examining the relationship between trait/ability EI and quality of life, well being, scholastic-academic achievement and professional outcomes. Some inconsistencies between the reported research findings are evidenced, suggesting the need for a more unitary and shared theoretical framework about EI, and for a convergence of the most used assessment tools.
