Abstract

Several studies have shown a decline in reading comprehension with aging. However, there is a lack of tools to measure this complex ability in older adults. The present study is aimed at presenting two reading comprehension tasks, and a methodology to evaluate the reading comprehension level in young-old (aged 65-74 years) and old-old adults (aged 75-90 years). The tasks used have a satisfactory reliability, validity and, therefore, can be considered a useful tool to assess reading comprehension in older adults. Moreover, taking into account participant's age and years of education, we propose an equation that permits to determine whether the level of reading comprehension reached by each older participant can be considered adequate or not.
