Abstract

The recent migration through the Balkans has disseminated new religions and enlarged those that seemed inconsequential. Religious affiliation plays a key role in setting group identity. Current laws on the registration of religious denominations have been shown inadequate to guarantee religious pluralism. This article criticizes the structure of religious liberty in the Balkans, and draws attention to the principle of subsidiarity imposed by the E.U. as a condition for E.U. membership. The current conflict could jeopardize religious peace, breaking a delicate balance.
