Abstract
In the Italian Constitution, work is one of the pillars on which the entire democratic system is built; the reference to the environment is instead only indirect, as part of the “landscapeµ that contributes to forming the cultural heritage that the Republic has the duty to protect. The essay intends to examine the strategies that can be used to free labour and the environment from their reduction to commodities, bought and sold on the market. For labour it is a question of putting it back at the centre of European policies freed from the ideological schemes of economic liberalism; for the environment, on the other hand, it is precisely the constitutional concept of “heritageµ that can be enhanced, especially in view of the defence of the rights of future generations, which are now recognised by many national jurisdictions
