Abstract
The author reminds the main issues of the debate which took place at the Constitutional Assembly as regarded the formulation of article 1: "Italy is a democratic Republic founded on labour" and particularly of the "founded on labour" wording. Then it analyzes the evolution of this principle in the following decays with particular attention to the problems of the relationship with citizenship and up to the s.c. present "society of consumers".
