Abstract
The Italian Constitution defines the "family" as "a natural society founded on matrimony". The article examines the contradictory meanings of this oxymoron, in which the (supposed) "natural" need of humankind to live in a narrow social group seems to be inconsistent with the legal organisation of marriage.
