Abstract
Judgement No. 136/2023 once again concerns Free Municipal Consortia and Metropolitan Cities within the Sicilian Region. These wide area entities are currently in a state of uncertainty because the Region has continued to postpone the election of their governing bodies and to extend commissarial management. The Constitutional Court has declared this state of uncertainty to be contrary to the Constitution. In order to grasp the significance of this decision, the paper will look at the succession of laws that have led to the current situation. In this way, it will be possible to identify some of the perplexities resulting from a problematic jurisprudence on wide area entities as it has evolved over time. Moreover, this decision does not put an end to the troubles of these entities, which in the Sicilian system, and not only, are doomed to be reformed in the future.
