Abstract

The document analyzes, from both a quantitative and qualitative perspective, the distribution of video game and gamification in Italian museums, as these new forms of expression can be used as tools for communication and promotion of cultural heritage. The text provides a quantitative overview based on a survey starting from the first 500 Italian museums, identifying 80 gaming initiatives involving 63 cultural institutions. The analysis maps gaming initiatives communicated online by museums and cultural institutions. It highlights the prevalence of archaeological sites, parks, and areas among the involved institutions, with a greater distribution in northern Italy. The qualitative investigation, carried out through interviews to museums and producers, emphasizes the importance of graphic design, gameplay, and the narrative.
