Abstract
In Italy it has not been implemented a system for the external evaluation of schools. However, recently the Government has enacted a draft-regulation for school evaluation and some pilot studies - such as Vales - have tried out procedures and instruments for testing it. This work illustrates such studies and discuss them in the light of the international debate about school evaluation, the relationship between self-evaluation and external evaluation and the link between evaluation and school improvement.
