Abstract
Family-made home movies of the first two years of life of seven autistic children were studied. The movies provide data on three areas of behaviour: social interaction, communication and language, functional and symbolic play. The results evidence that children with autism start developing up to a point, get worse after their first year and lose skills they have acquired. Moreover, even when some form of development takes place the most frequent behaviours are those that do not require representational skills. In general, behaviours requiring metarepresentation are quite rare.
