Abstract
A new task for the assessment of the spelling skills of Italian children has been standardized on a sample of 318 children attending from first to fifth grade of primary school. The task is a spelling to dictation test, consisting in a meaningful passage that includes words with regular and unpredictable spelling, tapping the efficiency of both lexical and sublexical spelling procedures. Normative data for the analysis of spelling errors are also reported, allowing to quantify lexical and phonological errors. The spelling task is simple to use and has demonstrated good psychometric proprieties. Applications of the test for the study of normal spelling acquisition and developmental dysgraphia have been reported.
