Abstract
Fūryu, refinement, is the essence of traditional Japanese aesthetics and is related deeply to nature and the natural environment. The spirit of fūryu was visualized in kazari (decoration), which was an impelling force to bring about the Japanese style culminated in the 12th century. This paper presents an historical overview of fūryu as reflected in the concept of Kuki Shuzo especially on the categorized dualism.
