Abstract

This paper aims to highlight the personality and the role of Lafcadio Hearn (alias Koizumi Yakumo) through its Engish rewriting of Japanese fantastic tales (kaidanbanashi) from the repertoire of gesaku literature of the modern period. In particular, this paper analyzes the tale Jikininki taken from his collection Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange things (1904) by comparing it with the original prototext Aozukin written by Ueda Akinari and selected from Ugetsu monogatari(1776).
