Abstract
The years during which Petrarch wrote the Secretum correspond with a renewed and more aware engagement with the Bible and, in particular, with wisdom books – likely through the mediation of St. Augustine. This paper aims to illustrate the thematic and linguistic intersections between the book of Ecclesiastes and the Secretum, highlighting a similar narrative of the concept of ‘limit’, articulated as mors, laqueus and modus.
