Abstract
The Italian university system immediately re-established itself and developed international relations with new players (such as India and Australia). These relations are traced through extracts taken from ministerial papers and from the vantage point of the University of Rome. Despite serious financial difficulties, which were also raised in parliamentary debates, the development of relations also accompanied and determined new perspectives for disciplines. Professors and Italian universities played an active role in the new coordinating institutions: Iaupl (International association of university professors and lecturers) and Iau (International association of universities).
